French Cottages We like

Good morning, how are you today? We will be leaving for Paris on Sunday and we can’t wait. Whenever thinking about France, Mrs D always dreams of those white  cottages with French charm and Scandinavian allure. A dream holiday in France got to be in one of these cottages.

OK, this time around, we will be staying in hotels in center Paris. Not in some French countryside that filled with charm, French doors and candle lights. But it doesn’t stop Mrs D from dreaming of these French cottages. So today, we are touring some of the amazing French decors. Hope you enjoy them as much as we do.

Earth Day Globe Cake

Earth Day Cake, Recipe by Amidnightvisitor,Hemisphere Cake map of AustraliaIf you are planning your summeer trip, most likely you would want to check out the map. OK, Miss D showed us this map, and in a glance we thought that it is the map of Australian. Nothing special there. Miss D is missing her best friends back in Sydney, so she might check out the map to see. Pretty normal for her as she loves to check out the map on the globe we bought her recently.

Oh, boy, we are totally wrong. This is no map at all. This is actually an earth day globe cake, can you believe it. Not any ordinary cake as well, it is actually a rainbow cake. Underneath the blue ocean and green land, are yummy beautiful rainbow cakes! How good is that. No wonder Miss D is interested. We would, too. How about you?

Miss D is so into baking, cake making lately, and summer is coming, school holidays and more time on hand. She is planning to master the skills of baking this summer. A top priority for her as all her American friends are doing that already.

Of course, it takes a bit more skill to make this Earth Day Globe cake. It would be a bit ambitious to have a go at it for Miss D. But non the less, it’s fun to check out how to turn an ordinary cake into something so special. So here we go:

Earth day globe cake map of Australia 24

If you want to learn how to make this fantastic rainbow cake yourself, you can check out the details here. Happy baking.

Stuffed salami rolls with cheese and veggie recipe by amidnightvisitor, salami, carrots, cheese, food, appertizer

Summer holidays are just around the corner, and many of the expats are leaving for their home counties for a well deserved holiday. Unfortunately, some of our friends are leaving Jakarta forever. It is a time to say goodby as well.

On a lighter note, this is also a time for parties, to say goodbye and to celebrate the time we have been together over the years. A good excuse to enjoy some great food and companionship.

So today we are sharing a great appetizer for any poolside party.

Stuffed salami rolls with cheese and veggie

100 grams of salami
200 grams of goat cheese
2 carrots
2 stalks of celery
1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
salt and pepper (to taste)

Finely chop the celery.

Cut the carrots into thin sticks about 1/2 cm long.

Mix the cheese with olive oil, add salt and pepper to taste and mix until the mixture is smooth and creamy.

Add the celery, stir and let stand in refrigerator 10 minutes.

Place one slice of salami on a cutting board, spread it with the mixture.

Add 4-5 sticks of carrots on top and roll it up. Secure with tooth picks or pins.

Keep them cool until ready to serve.

Serve together with some salad.

Basic sugar cookie recipe and visit to an orphanage

basic sugar cookie recipe by amidnightvisitor, cookie, dessert, food, sugar cookie

Good morning, how are you today. Hello from a sunny bright day here in Jakarta. It still rains a lot lately, but today is a great day, sunshine and blue skies. Wait till the afternoon and see if it keeps this way, shall we?

Miss D visited an orphanage a few weeks ago with a student group in her school. She came back all hot but really moved. The kids in the orphanage were really little, starting from under 1 year old and up to school aged. Miss D and her friends brought fresh fruit and homemade food with them. They read stories and played games. We will post some photos soon, stay tuned.

It was a fun time, fun but really hot. Because it is over 30 degrees and there is no aircon. For the later, it is not because the orphans were badly treated, it is simply because the locals are used to hot weather and they don’t need air cons. (check out the 5 peculiar things in Jakarta here and you would know). But for Miss D and her friends, it’s really hard when it’s hot.

‘The kids don’t get to eat fresh fruit often,’ Miss D said. She felt sorry for the kids and want to go back soon and bring them more food, homemade ones if possible. So this summer, other than traveling, Miss D will learn some cooking skills and baking skills. Stay tuned.

To get a head start, how about some yummy and simple cookie recipes? Today, we are having sugar cookies:

Basic sugar cookie recipe

3 1/4 cups of flour
1 cup sugar
300g butter, softened
3 eggs
1 pinch of salt
50-100g dried cranberries

For the decoration (optional)
plain chocolate
powdered sugar
lemon juice
candied violets
plum jam

Combine the flour and sugar and mix with the butter until creamy and crumbly. Add the eggs and mix until you have a smooth ball of dough. Divide the dough into two equal parts. Add one of the two pieces of dough with dried cranberries. Wrap each of the doughs in plastic wrap and let stand for 30 minutes.

After 30 minutes, roll the dough on a floured board to a thickness of 1/2 cm.

Cut the dough with a cookie cutter ( rectangular, round and doughnut shaped are all great)

Place the shapes on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake in a preheated oven at 160 ° C until golden brown (about 15 minutes).

Eat plain or decorate with your favorite chocolate chips, sprinkles etc and enjoy.

What can a junior gymnast do?

ice skating amidnightvisitorGood morning, how are you today?

We haven’t post a video for sometime now, and I have to share this video with you. Look at what this young gymnast: can you do this? If you happened to have a little girl who is into gymnastics, you’ve got to check this out. It is totally amazing. See what acts can be done on ice.

Oh, once you finish watching this video, answer 1 simple question: will you still want to send your little one to learn gymnastic? IMHO, even a professional basketballer won’t be as precise as this young gymnast in controlling the ball. Enjoy:

According to Wiki:

A piñata (Spanish pronunciation: [piˈɲata]) is a container often made of papier-mâché, pottery, or cloth; it is decorated, and filled with small toys or candy, or both, and then broken as part of a ceremony or celebration. Piñatas are most commonly associated with Mexico, but their origins are considered to be in China. The idea of breaking a container filled with treats came to Europe in the 14th century, where the name, from the Italian pignatta, was introduced. The Spanish brought the European tradition to Mexico, although there were similar traditions in Mesoamerica. The Aztecs had a similar tradition to honor the birthday of the god Huitzilopochtli in mid December. According to local records, the Mexican piñata tradition began in the town of Acolman, just north of Mexico City, where piñatas were introduced for catechism purposes as well as to co-opt the Huitzilopochtli ceremony. Today, the piñata is still part of Mexican culture, the cultures of other countries in Latin America, as well as the United States, but it has mostly lost its religious character.

These piñata cookies will brighten up the gloomiest day and as far as party goes, these rainbow coloured cookies will be a huge party hit! Kids would love to break them open for a sweet surprise inside.

Chicken Parmesan Meatballs

Chicken-Parmesan-Meaball-Amidnightvisitor Recipes

Chicken Parmesan Meatballs sound like our kind of food, we love cheese and meat in the D house. Any kind of meatballs will do, but these chicken Parmesan meatballs not only taste yummy, they are also look pretty. We love to have these meatballs with spaghetti. The best meal in the house really. All of that gooey cheese inside the meatballs, so Yummy! You got to try it to believe how good the taste is.

Every now and then, we will make the meatballs in the D house. In Jakarta, fresh meat is quite expensive, and sometimes not as fresh. We normally get our meat from Ranch Market, or some special meat shops. Meatballs are one of Miss D’s favorite dishes, and she makes them for the entire house by herself sometimes.

These Parmesan meatballs are insanely good. Parmesan is pretty expensive in Jakarta, so sometimes we make meatballs without Parmesan. The meatballs are just as good. You can’t get wrong with meatballs really. It is good both as a snack or party appetizer, or a main meal! Want to make your very own Parmesan meatballs? You can go get the recipe and baking instructions over at Tablespoon!

Blogging tips, Google Searches, Alexa Ranking And Future Direction of Blogging

If you love blogging like Mrs D does (OK Mrs. D doesn’t really love blogging, but blogging found Mrs. D in Jakarta!), and if you have blogged long enough (more than a few months at least), then you probably know about Alexa ranking already. Some figures below about blog ranking as a background first:

  • 60Million, that’s how many blogs in the world (and adding by the minute)
  • 1.4 Billion, that’s how many Google search clicks every day (FYI Google is ranked #1 in the world and Google gets about 1,470,000,000 visits a day)
  • 30 Million, that’s most blogs start when they first ranked by Alexa (Amidnightvisitor.com starts at about 12.4 M thanks to the work already done by midnightvisitor blog)
  • 0.55M, this is around where Amidnightvisitor.com is ranked by Alexa this moment. (1M is a milestone, then 0.5M, then hopefully 100,000 one day. 100,000 would be more like professional blogging, most people can make a decent living out of this)

That said, Alexa ranking is not the most important factor in the blogging world (visitor numbers are). To rank around 100,000 in Alexa, the blog needs about 0.5m visitors a month. Does anyone know half a million people in their lives?

Anyways, Mrs D loves to start a project with a goal, that way it’s easier to know how to achieve it.

So now that we have been blogging for quiet some time (Amidnightvisitor.com started in mid January 2013). It has a OK base (around 550,000 ranking). The next goal is to achieve better Alexa ranking and JUST MAYBE some day make Amidnightvisitor a professional blog with Alexa ranking of 100,000.

How to achieve this? Well writing about Jakarta won’t get us there for sure. So during the past month, Mrs. D has been thinking about the future direction of Amidnightvisitor.com. Certain things need to be changed to get more visitors to this site. The keyword ‘Jakarta’ is not a popular word in Google search, compare to words such as ‘Food’. Of course, there are many popular and good ranking sites in Indonesia, but considering how many Indonesia locals will read English blogs? Probably not that many.

For the many blog posts we wrote in the past, we found that recipes and restaurants get the most searches. Everyone loves food, and it has no location restrictions. We can cook whatever meals we like no matter where we are. To make Amidnightvisitor.com a popular site, no matter where we live (we got to move back to Sydney one day :D ), it is a good choice to make Amidnightvisitor.com a more food oriented blog. Of course, we will still have Miss D’s corner, travel stories, fashion. But we will combine these into our food posts, i.e include some of our stories in the food posts. Hopefully, this will make our blog a more Google friendly blog.
